The Player Journey Concept

As we move towards the 2026 season, we wanted to share an important update on the ‘The Player Journey Concept’ and how this continues to align with our Let Them Play and Let Them Ref approach across all parts of the game.

Over the past year, significant work has taken place across departments and with the members of the NPG to ensure the Player Journey is clearer, more consistent, and focused on what matters most: creating the right environments for players to develop, enjoy the game, and stay involved for life.

Player Journey – a clear, age-appropriate pathway

The Player Journey is designed to support players at every age and stage, recognising that development is not linear and that players grow at different speeds.

  • Young players are encouraged to start with small-sided formats, such as 1v1, 2V2 and moving to the maximum 4v4 game format, with lots of touches, decisions, and enjoyment.
  • As players mature, they progress into 7v7 and then 11v11, when they are ready – physically, emotionally, and technically.

Importantly, we continue to promote club-based activities, enhanced games, and flexible formats, particularly where travel demands or formal competition may not best serve a child’s development.

This balanced approach allows players to grow with the game, rather than being rushed through it.

Let Them Play – creating the right environment

Alongside the Player Journey, Let Them Play remains central to how football should look and feel in Scotland. The focus is simple but powerful:

  • Football at developmental stages is about fun, learning, and enjoyment.
  • Players need time and space to breathe, make mistakes, and develop skills without fear.
  • Positive behaviour from adults, coaches, parents, officials, and volunteers, is critical in shaping experiences and long-term participation.

To support this, we encourage everyone to continue sharing and using the Let Them Play Toolkit, which provides practical guidance for clubs, coaches, parents, and officials.

Consistency across the game

We are asking everyone involved in community and grassroots football to adopt a shared model, so the game feels consistent wherever it is played. While formats and experiences will naturally evolve as players grow, the underpinning principles should remain the same:

  • Player-centred
  • Development-focused

Safe, inclusive, and positive

Player safety – heading guidelines

Finally, a reminder to re-read and apply the Scottish FA heading guidelines, particularly within the children’s game. These guidelines are in place to protect players and create a safe learning environment across children’s, youth, and adult football.

As we look ahead to the next 12 months, we are excited about the continued development of our football journey offering. By working together, sharing consistent messages, and creating positive environments, we can ensure Scottish football continues to grow in the right way.
